Slash's solo album announcement

Bookmark and Share

Here's the official  press release that was used to announce the Slash solo album
-
In what will be his first true solo album, rock icon Slash announced today his album, 'Slash', will be released in the UK on 10 May 2010 through Roadrunner Records.
The album features an all-star roster of guest musicians including Ian Astbury, Chris Cornell, Rocco DeLuca, Fergie, Dave Grohl, Myles Kennedy, Kid Rock, Lemmy Kilmister, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Duff McKagan, M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, and Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother.
A major undertaking for Slash, he enlisted services of producing partner Eric Valentine (Queens Of The Stone Age, The All-American Rejects) and compiled a rhythm section of bassist Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction) and drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails). Slash handled the majority of arranging and songwriting duties and hand-picked each guest artist. The album's guests worked collaboratively with Slash to round out the song.
"The idea was really simple in the beginning," said Slash. "These are all artists I wanted to work with – that I thought it would be amazing to do something creative and collaborative. And I was so impressed with what everyone brought to the table. They were all so committed to doing a good job. And we had a lot of fun making these songs."

Background

Slash is widely considered one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. He has received countless accolades and awards including a 2007 star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside his idols Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix.
An original member of iconic rock band Guns N' Roses, Slash helped the band create signature sounds like the guitar riff of #1 hit Sweet Child O' Mine and Welcome To The Jungle. The band dominated the 1980s and '90s music scene selling more than 100 million albums worldwide and ushered in a decade of hard charging rock music.
After the band's break-up, Slash went on to critical acclaim in his personal project Slash's Snakepit, and global success with supergroup Velvet Revolver. He has been widely sought after by the biggest musicians of all time, performing with everyone from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder to Ray Charles.
Slash is one of the marquee playable characters in Guitar Hero III, has two signature Gibson guitars in his name, and authored his own top-selling biography Slash in 2007.

"Baby Can't Drive" lyrics Slash and Alice Cooper

Baby Can't Drive is a non album track from the recording sessions of Slash's album. The track features the talents of  Alice CooperNicole ScherzingerSteven Adler and Flea who is the bass player from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The inclusion of Steven Adler on the record is notable as he was booted from GNR for addiction issues. Slash said, “I promised Steve Adler if he stayed clean long enough he could play on the record. I hadn’t played with Steven in 20 years and it was great. One of the reasons Appetite For Destruction is so great is the energy that he brings to the table. It was great to get in a room with him and start playing and just to recognise that sound that he has.”

"Baby Can't Drive" lyrics

Doin her hair, runnin red lights in her underwear.
She likes to step on the gas,
put her foot to the floor,
music to her ears when the engines roar.

There ain't much she can't do
(Anything I want to do)
But when I turn my back
(I'm a mean speed demon, heart attack).

Baby can't drive, baby can't drive,
I'm a million miles away doing 105.
If you wanna survive, try and get there alive,
Baby can't drive, baby can't drive.

I got my (?) out, makin the stereo bleed,
Textin my girls while I'm drivin with my knees.
I'm doin my nails, I'm paintin em black, cause baby's hit the road and there's no turning back.

My knuckles turnin white, Cause baby wants to drive all night.
My hair is turnin grey, cause baby wants to drive all day.

Baby can't drive, baby can't drive,
I'm a million miles away doing 105.
If you wanna survive, try and get there alive,
Baby can't drive, baby can't drive.

Yeah, yeah, baby can't drive,
Yeah, yeah, yeahhhhhhhh!

Baby can't drive, baby can't drive,
I'm a million miles away doing 105.
If you wanna survive, try and get there alive,
Baby can't drive, baby can't drive.

Baby, baby, baby, baby can't drive.
You know I love you baby, but baby can't drive,
You just can't drive.
(I never said I could...uh-oh...not my car)

"We're All Gonna Die" lyrics Slash and Iggy Pop

The final track on Slash's solo album features the Wild Child himself, Mr Iggy Pop. Known for fronting the Stooges and a fairly successful solo career, I vaguely recall some of the GNR musicians once helped him out on a few tracks, this is probably some form of professional payback.

Slash said about the recording process “Iggy was the first guy to come in the studio and put a vocal down. When I sent him the song he called me up a couple of days later and over the phone, on my answering machine he left him singing the words while the demo I sent him was playing off the stereo in the background. It was so rock ‘n’ roll, it was really, really cool.

"I flew him in from Miami and he came in and put that down. It was just great, he sort of set the tone for the whole record.”

"We're All Gonna Die" lyrics:

Gee, I really like your tits
I'll say anything that fits
We carry our vision
Wherever we go
If you keep your mouth shut
It's still gonna show

We're all gonna die
So let's get high
We're all gonna die
So let's be nice
I'm in the mood
So let's intrude
Pee on the ground
And jump around

I'm getting sick of paying bills
I need my doctor, I need my pills
We carry our women
Wherever we go
If you keep their mouth shut
They're gonna moan
(Mhm)

We're all gonna die
So let's get high
We're all gonna die
So let's be nice
I'm in the mood
So let's intrude
Pee on the ground (heh heh)
And jump around

Life is demanding
But I'm just a bum
And if I respect it, boy
I feel dumb!

SOLO

We're all gonna die
So let's get high
We're all gonna die
So let's be nice
I'm in the mood
So let's intrude
Pee on the ground
And jump around

We're all gonna die!!!!!

(We're all gonna die)
(Laughing)
(We're all gonna die)
(I wanna, I wanna, I wanna whip it out and pee on the ground!)
(We're all gonna die)
(And then I'm gonna, and then I'm gonna, and then I'm gonna, afhadlfhalfheoqwefhlance, what am I gonna do? I'm gonna jump around!)

"Starlight" lyrics Slash and Myles Kennedy

Starlight is the second song on Slash's solo album that Myles Kennedy features on. The first is Back from Cali

“This particular song was the one I thought was the best on the record in terms of the way it was arranged and the music and everything. I couldn’t figure out who would be right vocalist and all of a sudden Myles Kennedy just popped into my head. I contacted him and I sent him the song, and a couple of days later he sent me back a demo of the lyrics and vocals he’d written, and it was fucking amazing. I was really excited to record that.”

"I wanted to get Jack White, but he didn't want to sing. He said I'll play drums, I'll play guitar, but I don't wanna sing. He was one guy that I wanted to work with. Pretty much everyone else that I went after I managed to get. It turned out to probably be a blessing because Myles really fit that song. Jack would've fit it too but it would have been a different kind of a trip.”

"Starlight" lyrics

In the distance
Light years from tomorrow
But far beyond yesterday
She is watching
Heart aching with sorrow
She is broken, as she waits
Hoping that when all is said and done, we learn to love and be as one

Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re gonna make it right
Before tomorrow
Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re going to find a place where we belong (where we belong)
And so you know
You’ll never shine alone

There are shadows sleeping on the horizon
That leaves us scared and so afraid
As the fall out of a world divided
It brings her tears and so much pain
And so we take cover from the dark
Hoping to find where we can start

Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re gonna make it right
Before tomorrow
Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re going to find a place where we belong (where we belong)
And so you know
You’ll never shine alone
Starlight, we’ll find a place where we belong (where we belong)

You will see as the mountains fall and turn to dust
That there’s one thing that won’t change
I believe there’s something within each of us that always stays
That will always remain as long as love never fades

She is watching, heart aching with sorrow
She is broken, as she waits

"Nothing to Say" Lyrics Slash and M Shadows

M Shadows is better known as the lead singer of rock band Avenged Sevenfold

“There wasn't a lot of conscious thought about what kind of record I was making. I was just pooling all of these people together and it was a devil-may-care kind of thing, but once I started to look at the list of people I’d already worked with, sort of halfway through the record, I had some of my heroes on there, some of my contemporaries and I wanted to have some young guys.

Slash

"For Nothing to Say I was thinking that Dave Mustaine would've been great, but I didn’t want to spin way too much into any one era. Then I thought of Avenged Sevenfold, and fortunately we share the same management so M Shadows was easy to contact! And he was great, he came in and worked really hard to get the melodies together, he took it very seriously. It’s me getting away with something I couldn’t do in Velvet Revolver!”

"Nothing to Say" Lyrics: Incomplete - any takers with the rest?

We seem so lost and jaded
Well what a price to pay
It can't be overstated,
and you seem infatuated
with finding who's to blame.

While it can seem so hard now,
I got a feeling we ain't meant to live this way.

Don't tell me it's too late,
cause I feel it too, we all love to hate
and let others lead the way.

Some searching to find
That life with a new piece of mind.

And still we march further away,
Singing our songs of yesterday.
While so much still stands in our way,
Voices with nothing to say.

Some feel that life's a favor,
While some don't have the time.
Worship and kiss the altar,
All hail the mighty father,
but love will keep you blind.

Same questions we keep asking,
Won't hear the answers
cause we're scared of what we'll find

We try and compensate through our troubled faith that should keep us safe
and keep searching for a sign.

Some searching to find
That life with a new piece of mind.

And still we march further away,
Singing our songs of yesterday.
While so much still stands in our way,
Voices with nothing to say.

There won’t be another day, no changing of the seasons,
And no one's gonna save us from the lies.

The greatest story ever told,
Is only what you make it.
There will be struggle and fear,
All by design

And still we march further away (So lost and jaded)
Singing our songs of yesterday (Nothing's got all the point, the blame)
While so much still stands in our way (Yeahhh!)
Voices with nothing to say

I Hold On Lyrics Slash and Kid Rock

Slash said about I Hold On “Sometimes I would take two different ideas and send them to one artist to see which they gravitated towards. With Kid Rock, I sent him the first one – absolutely no reaction, no phone call back, nothing.

"I thought, hmm. So I sent him an email telling him I had another song that I thought he should hear because I had two songs that sounded like him. So I sent him the other one; instant reaction. This is great.”

I Hold On Lyrics

I feel comfort in your in my dreams
Unprotected silent screams
Light beyond your shadow beams
Still I don’t know what it means

When seasons change
Things Remain  (?)

Chorus

I hold on cause I won’t let go
even though I know there’s solitude in your arms
I hold on cause I cant’ let go
I refuse to let her angel face go (?)
I hold on
And when the darkness turns today
I won’t let you drift away
Conscience fades and let’s go (?)
But I hang on cause I know
When she’s ashamed
When things remain (?)

Chorus

I hold on cause I won’t let go
even though I know there’s solitude in your arms
I hold on cause I cant’ let go
I refuse to let her angel face go (?)
I hold on

Endst with various 'I hold on' style adlibs.

"Watch This" Lyrics Slash, Dave Grohl and Duff McKagan

"Watch This" features Mr Foo Fighters Dave Grohl & and ex GNR and Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan

Slash said “I wrote the basic parts and I had sort of a loose arrangement, but this was definitely the loosest song of the bunch, and having Dave there, who is such a dynamic drummer – I’d never actually worked with him but I’m very familiar with his drumming – and with Duff there too, they’re both very creative so I knew we could throw this together.

"I didn’t want it to be epic, I wanted it to be three minutes long, and it came together very quickly with a very spontaneous, live kind of vibe. Actually, I tried to get Dave to sing it, but he wouldn’t sing it, so I just said fuck it, we’ll put guitars on it. He was adamant about not singing, he was like, I just wanna play drums, and he’s a fucking phenomenal drummer.”

The irony of coming to the site looking for Watch This lyrics are that this song is an instrumental!

The above picture shows Lemmy and Slash hanging out during the recording session for Doctor Alibi.

“Lemmy’s like one of my all-time fucking heroes, and he’s a mate too. I really appreciate everything about him. I asked him to play on the record because it just seemed like one of the coolest things to do.

"He came in and he wrote these great fucking words – he’s such an awesome lyricist. And the song's lyric is basically about the doctor saying that if you keep living the way you are living then you’re gonna die and then another doctor saying, keep doing what you’re doing you’re gonna be fine. And it sort of tells the story of my whole existence!"

For those that don't know, Lemmy made his name playing in the band Motorhead.

Lyrics Doctor Alibi

I went to see the doctor
He said you're pretty sick
You got some real bad habits
You'd better stop right quick

I said doctor that's real bad news
Don't know what I'm gonna do

Doctor
There's nothin' wrong with me
Doctor doctor
Can't you see
Doctor
I ain't gonna die
Just write me an alibi

I went to see a shaman
He said you'll be alright
Just keep doin' what you love
Every single night

I said that's what I need to hear
(?) my childish fears

Doctor
(?)
Doctor doctor
My oh my
Doctor
You're the one for me
That's the mojo that I need

Don't you know that I feel alright
Doin' what I do
I ain't gonna tow the line
Not till' I turn blue All I got is one short life
That's what people say
And I ain't gonna waste a second
Doin' what you say

*solo*

I won't be the one you like
I won't be the boy next door
I won't be the chosen one
That's not what I'm here for
I don't like the way you are
I despise what you hold dear
Don't you try to make me change
I'll haunt you for a thousand years

Doctor
Don't you (?)
Doctor
Don't you (?)
Doctor
Stay away from me
Sick is what I'd rather be
Doctor
Doctor doctor death
Doctor
Doctor out of breath
Doctor
I ain't gonna die
Just write me an alibi

"Gotten" lyrics Slash and Adam Levine

Slash said “It was a piece of music I couldn’t let go of. I finally got to the point where I had a complete arrangement and had written string parts on keyboard and recorded a demo. Even the engineer who I was doing the demos with was sick of hearing that song!

"I thought Adam wasn’t going to be sure about it. But I went to his house and he actually liked it a lot and he wrote the perfect vocal for it. He sings like an angel on it, and it doesn’t sound like Maroon 5 but you can tell it’s his voice. I think people will really appreciate the way it sounds.”

Gotten Lyrics with Slash and that guy everyone hates from Maroon 5...

So nice to see your face again
Tell me how long has it been
Since you’ve been here
(since you’ve been here)
You look so different than before
You’re still the person I adore
Frozen with fear
All out of love but I take it from the past
All out of words cause I’m sure it’ll never last

I’ve been saving these last words for one last miracle
But now I’m not sure
I can’t save you if you don’t let me
You just get me like I’ve never been gotten before

Maybe it’s a bitter wind
That chilled from the pacific rim
That brought you this way
(brought you my way)
Do not make me think of him
The way he touched your fragile skin
That haunts me every day
I’m out of love but I can’t forget the past
I’m out of words but I’m sure it’ll never last

I’ve been saving these last words for one last miracle
But now I’m not sure
I can’t save you if you don’t let me
You just get me like I’ve never been gotten before
Like I’ve never been gotten before

Slash Solo

So nice to see your face again
But tell me will this ever end
Don’t disappear

I’ve been saving these last words for one last miracle
But now I’m not sure
And I can’t save you if you don’t let me
You just get me like I’ve never been gotten before
Like I’ve never been gotten before

"Promise" Lyrics Chris Cornell and Slash

Said Slash: “Chris was great. Promise was probably the most unorthodox piece of music that I’d written, it was very different. It was one of those things, I don’t know why I thought of him for that song more than any of the others, but I sent it to him and within 48 hours he sent me this great lyric and we were off and running. it was as simple as that. Everybody seems to like this one.”

Cornell wrote the lyrics, Slash the music.

Promise Lyrics:

The first time I ever saw you
You had that far away look in your eyes
And heaven's eyes shined down upon you
And the whole room filled up with light

Now the cruel world it's gonna try and change you
Try to hang you up and mess with your pride
Now the rich just try to chain you (?)
You got to keep your fire burning inside

Promise me
You won’t let them put out your fire
Put out your fire
Promise me
You won't let them put out your fire
Put out your fire

Now sometimes the world tries to slap you
And it seems to love watching you fall
I wont lie to you, it's gonna happen
You got to pick yourself up and move on

Promise me
You won’t let them put out your fire
Put out your fire
Promise me
You won't let them put out your fire
Put out your fire

Which star will I be thinking of tonight
Tonight
Which star will I be thinking of tonight
Tonight

Promise me
You won’t let them put out your fire
Put out your fire
You won't let them put out your fire
Put out your fire

Promise me
(Why don’t you)
Promise me
(Why don’t you)
Promise me

Promise me

"Back from Cali" Lyrics Slash

Featuring Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy on lead vocals. Kennedy also toured with Slash to promote the GNR guitarist's solo album.

Of the song Slash said, “When we were thinking about getting a single I was thinking of writing another song and getting Myles to sing it. Then it dawned on me that I had another killer piece or music that I had demoed up for this record but couldn’t think of anybody to sing it so I'd been resigned to the idea of not doing it.

“So I put an arrangement together and sent it to him and he wrote this killer part for it. We flew him out to LA, recorded the song and squeezed it onto the record at the very last minute. Before we even recorded the song we had to get the album artwork done and had to put the name of the song in there before it was recorded. I knew it was going to be a good song, but it was by the seat of our pants.

"It’s different to anything else on the record. It’s a heavy, slow AC/DC kind of deal with really, really great vocals.” Miles and Slash also collaborated on Starlight.

Back From Cali with Myles Kennedy on vocals

Woke up this morning all alone
I got a ringin' in my head
I couldn't take it anymore today
She left me here for dead
Oh, I (echoed)

And it don't come as no surprise
I should have known if from the start
The lights are faded
And I can't deny this place ain't got no heart

Oh, you can hear my tonight
You can hear me tonight

You'll have to carry me
Back from Cali
I'm tired and broken and I lost my way
You'll have to carry me
Back to where I belong
You'll have to carry me
Back from Cali
I don't want money
I don't need the fame
You'll have to carry me
Back to where I belong

I got to leave this angel city
I can't do it by myself
So if you please
Mama, can you save me
Before I blow this life to hell

Oh, love
Mama drag me by the feet
And just drag me home

You'll have to carry me
Back from Cali
I don't care if you think I'm to blame
You'll have to carry me
Back to where I belong
You'll have to carry me
Back from Cali
The angel city where the devils play
You'll have to carry me
Back to where I belong

Yeah, you can hear me tonight
You can hear me tonight
You can hear me tonight
You can hear me tonight

I've lost my way
I'm so alone
And all I want to do is come home

"Crucify the Dead" Lyrics Slash (feat. Ozzy Osbourne)

The Prince of Darkness said yes to Slash's offer of collaboration and the rest is history. Said Slash of Ozzy, “Ozzy was a lot of fun. It was a real honour – he’s so busy with his stuff – and he took the time to stop and really focus on writing the lyrics for this song.

"We recorded the vocals up at Ozzy’s house, and it was funny because I’m sitting here and Ozzy’s here and we’re sitting at the control board and he’s got his microphone, and he’s working on the lyrics and he’s singing them, trying to work out how they should go. It’s such a recognisable voice!

"It was just a trip to hear Ozzy working out the parts for a piece of music that I wrote. Somebody I’d been listening to since I was a kid, all of a sudden right there. He put together a very poignant set of lyrics about a particular subject matter that a lot of us can relate to..."

What does that last line mean? Given the imagery the lyrics refer to in terms of Guns and Roses and thorns etc there has been some speculation that the song is a reference to the fractured relationship between Axl Rose and Slash. It could even be a response to GNR's Sorry which some considered to be Axl refering to Slash. It's pure speculation of course!

"Crucify the Dead" Lyrics

The fire started long ago

The flames burned out, still embers glow

So charred and black

There's nothing left to burn, to burn

We had the same dream

Lived life to extreme

A loaded gun jammed by a rose

The thorns are not around your head

Your ego cursed you till you bled

You cannot crucify the dead

To me you're dead, yeah

The future is unset in stone

Decisions past leave you alone

Betrayed us all with your own selfish greed, your greed, yeah

New soldiers now say

That your beggars collect

Re-crucified and paid by you

The thorns are not around your head

Your ego cursed you till you bled

You cannot crucify the dead

To me you're dead, yeah

We were like brothers with the world in our hands

You always have too much to say

Someday you look back and you wonder why

You let it all slip away, yeah

Crucify the dead

Crucify the dead

The thorns are not around your head

Your ego cursed you till you bled

You cannot crucify the dead

To me you're dead, yeah
