Slash's solo album announcement

Bookmark and Share

Here's the official  press release that was used to announce the Slash solo album
-
In what will be his first true solo album, rock icon Slash announced today his album, 'Slash', will be released in the UK on 10 May 2010 through Roadrunner Records.
The album features an all-star roster of guest musicians including Ian Astbury, Chris Cornell, Rocco DeLuca, Fergie, Dave Grohl, Myles Kennedy, Kid Rock, Lemmy Kilmister, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Duff McKagan, M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, and Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother.
A major undertaking for Slash, he enlisted services of producing partner Eric Valentine (Queens Of The Stone Age, The All-American Rejects) and compiled a rhythm section of bassist Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction) and drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails). Slash handled the majority of arranging and songwriting duties and hand-picked each guest artist. The album's guests worked collaboratively with Slash to round out the song.
"The idea was really simple in the beginning," said Slash. "These are all artists I wanted to work with – that I thought it would be amazing to do something creative and collaborative. And I was so impressed with what everyone brought to the table. They were all so committed to doing a good job. And we had a lot of fun making these songs."

Background

Slash is widely considered one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. He has received countless accolades and awards including a 2007 star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside his idols Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix.
An original member of iconic rock band Guns N' Roses, Slash helped the band create signature sounds like the guitar riff of #1 hit Sweet Child O' Mine and Welcome To The Jungle. The band dominated the 1980s and '90s music scene selling more than 100 million albums worldwide and ushered in a decade of hard charging rock music.
After the band's break-up, Slash went on to critical acclaim in his personal project Slash's Snakepit, and global success with supergroup Velvet Revolver. He has been widely sought after by the biggest musicians of all time, performing with everyone from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder to Ray Charles.
Slash is one of the marquee playable characters in Guitar Hero III, has two signature Gibson guitars in his name, and authored his own top-selling biography Slash in 2007.

"Starlight" lyrics Slash and Myles Kennedy

Starlight is the second song on Slash's solo album that Myles Kennedy features on. The first is Back from Cali

“This particular song was the one I thought was the best on the record in terms of the way it was arranged and the music and everything. I couldn’t figure out who would be right vocalist and all of a sudden Myles Kennedy just popped into my head. I contacted him and I sent him the song, and a couple of days later he sent me back a demo of the lyrics and vocals he’d written, and it was fucking amazing. I was really excited to record that.”

"I wanted to get Jack White, but he didn't want to sing. He said I'll play drums, I'll play guitar, but I don't wanna sing. He was one guy that I wanted to work with. Pretty much everyone else that I went after I managed to get. It turned out to probably be a blessing because Myles really fit that song. Jack would've fit it too but it would have been a different kind of a trip.”

"Starlight" lyrics

In the distance
Light years from tomorrow
But far beyond yesterday
She is watching
Heart aching with sorrow
She is broken, as she waits
Hoping that when all is said and done, we learn to love and be as one

Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re gonna make it right
Before tomorrow
Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re going to find a place where we belong (where we belong)
And so you know
You’ll never shine alone

There are shadows sleeping on the horizon
That leaves us scared and so afraid
As the fall out of a world divided
It brings her tears and so much pain
And so we take cover from the dark
Hoping to find where we can start

Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re gonna make it right
Before tomorrow
Oh Starlight
Don’t you cry we’re going to find a place where we belong (where we belong)
And so you know
You’ll never shine alone
Starlight, we’ll find a place where we belong (where we belong)

You will see as the mountains fall and turn to dust
That there’s one thing that won’t change
I believe there’s something within each of us that always stays
That will always remain as long as love never fades

She is watching, heart aching with sorrow
She is broken, as she waits

I Hold On Lyrics Slash and Kid Rock

Bookmark and Share
Slash said about I Hold On “Sometimes I would take two different ideas and send them to one artist to see which they gravitated towards. With Kid Rock, I sent him the first one – absolutely no reaction, no phone call back, nothing.

"I thought, hmm. So I sent him an email telling him I had another song that I thought he should hear because I had two songs that sounded like him. So I sent him the other one; instant reaction. This is great.”

I Hold On Lyrics

I feel comfort in your in my dreams
Unprotected silent screams
Light beyond your shadow beams
Still I don’t know what it means

When seasons change
Things Remain  (?)

Chorus

I hold on cause I won’t let go
even though I know there’s solitude in your arms
I hold on cause I cant’ let go
I refuse to let her angel face go (?)
I hold on
And when the darkness turns today
I won’t let you drift away
Conscience fades and let’s go (?)
But I hang on cause I know
When she’s ashamed
When things remain (?)

Chorus

I hold on cause I won’t let go
even though I know there’s solitude in your arms
I hold on cause I cant’ let go
I refuse to let her angel face go (?)
I hold on

Endst with various 'I hold on' style adlibs.

"Watch This" Lyrics Slash, Dave Grohl and Duff McKagan

"Watch This" features Mr Foo Fighters Dave Grohl & and ex GNR and Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan

Slash said “I wrote the basic parts and I had sort of a loose arrangement, but this was definitely the loosest song of the bunch, and having Dave there, who is such a dynamic drummer – I’d never actually worked with him but I’m very familiar with his drumming – and with Duff there too, they’re both very creative so I knew we could throw this together.

"I didn’t want it to be epic, I wanted it to be three minutes long, and it came together very quickly with a very spontaneous, live kind of vibe. Actually, I tried to get Dave to sing it, but he wouldn’t sing it, so I just said fuck it, we’ll put guitars on it. He was adamant about not singing, he was like, I just wanna play drums, and he’s a fucking phenomenal drummer.”

The irony of coming to the site looking for Watch This lyrics are that this song is an instrumental!

"Crucify the Dead" Lyrics Slash (feat. Ozzy Osbourne)

Said Slash of Ozzy “Ozzy was a lot of fun. It was a real honour – he’s so busy with his stuff – and he took the time to stop and really focus on writing the lyrics for this song.

Check out the lyrics to the first single off Slash's album, By the Sword.

"We recorded the vocals up at Ozzy’s house, and it was funny because I’m sitting here and Ozzy’s here and we’re sitting at the control board and he’s got his microphone, and he’s working on the lyrics and he’s singing them, trying to work out how they should go. It’s such a recognisable voice!

"It was just a trip to hear Ozzy working out the parts for a piece of music that I wrote. Somebody I’d been listening to since I was a kid, all of a sudden right there. He put together a very poignant set of lyrics about a particular subject matter that a lot of us can relate to..."

Beautiful Dangerous lyrics by Slash

“I got hip to Fergie being probably as good or better a rock singer than she is a pop singer. I heard her do Barracuda, the old Heart song, and I was like, fuckin’ wow!

"I ended up doing a couple of shows with her where she sang Barracuda and Sweet Child O’ Mine. She’s one of the most phenomenal fucking rock ‘n’ roll singers, male or female, I’ve ever heard.”

Beautiful Dangerous Lyrics

I don't know who you are now
Mystery drenches my brain
I wanna jump deep into your cloud
'Cuz something tell's me it's gonna rain

I guess the blood starts pumping (the only line I am not sure of)
And my heart starts jumping
And that's when I spit on the pole
Now my head's exploding
And your gun is loaded
So I'm guessing I'm on a roll
Well it's a fine time
Looking for a wine time man
And you said "baby you ready to play"
Well come right on this roller-coaster
Cuz it aint over, it aint over

Now we're on this planet
I'm in love with all your danger, danger
We can live forever
I can be your pagan angel, angel
Beautiful Dangerous

You acted smooth like brandy
Savor the flavor with life
You can be Sid, I'll be Nancy
Cause sometimes it's more fun to fight

By the Sword Lyrics Slash

"By the Sword" is the first official single from Slash's solo album. It features Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother on vocals and was released as a single on March 1, 2010.

“It’s just a riff that I had that stuck with me. I think I came up with it here in the UK with Velvet Revolver at a soundcheck. A lot of the material on the record was written in hotel rooms during that last Velvet Revolver tour.

"Andrew’s phenomenal singer but I’d never met him before so I didn’t know who to fucking contact! And a friend of mine – Tom Zutaut, the guy that signed Guns N’ Roses to Geffen back in the eighties – got his number for me.

"Andrew happened to be in Hollywood working on Cosmic Egg, so I took an acoustic over there and we wrote the song together. I had this riff and a couple of chord changes and he changed a couple of chords for the chorus, it was just very organic. It’s a very cool song.”
It's probably only a coincidence to notice the first line of the lyric references riding horses like the U2 song but also that the third line refers to the U2 album, All that You Can't Leave Behind....

By the Sword Lyrics:

With the horses that you ride,
And the feelings left inside,

Comes a time you need to leave all that behind,

Well they claim they'd like to know,

And they'll fight you there to go,

And they're gatherin' around for all the show,

Well there is a reward,

To live and die by the sword,

Well they tried to complicate you,

But you left it all behind,

All the worldly possessions,

Are left for recollections,

And finally it's all gone!

They're releasing all the hounds,

What is lost can still be found,

When you're walking with your fear down on the ground,

Well there's those who choose to run

Following the setting sun,

And now it seems the journey's has begun,

Well there is a reward,

To live and die by the sword,

Well they tried to complicate you,

But you left it all behind,

All the worldly possessions,

Are left for recollections,

And finally it's all gone!

With the horses that you ride,

And the feelings left inside,

there's a time you need to leave it all behind,

Well there is no reward,

To live and die by the sword,

Well they tried to complicate you,

But you left it all behind,

All the worldly possessions,

Are left for recollections,

And finally it's all gone!
